How can I apply to be on the IMAN Artist Roster or a Sacred Cypher Creative?
Applications for the IMAN Artist Roster are closed. Join IMAN’s mailing list to be notified when the next round of applications opens and to follow our Arts & Culture events.
Who is eligible to apply?
For the Artist Roster: Working performing and visual artists at various stages of career development who align with IMAN’s Mission and Arts & Culture Philosophy are eligible to apply. Successful applicants demonstrate a practice of cultivating work informed by being rooted in a spiritual tradition and social consciousness as well as a commitment to space, equity and community. Eligible artists based in any part of the USA and abroad are welcomed and encouraged to apply.
For Sacred Cypher Creatives: Only artists who are active members of the IMAN Artist Roster are eligible to apply.
Do I have to live in or move to Chicago or Atlanta in order to be apply or be included on the Roster ?
Not at all. While the majority of our programs take place in relationship to IMAN’s campuses in Chicago and Atlanta, applicants do not need to be based in Chicago or Atlanta to apply or participate. IMAN Arts & Culture intentionally and frequently presents, engages and builds relationships with artists from throughout the USA and internationally through our programs and residencies. Eligible artists based in any part of the USA and abroad are welcomed and encouraged to apply.
How often do the artists on the Roster change?
IMAN values long-term relationships, so artists can potentially remain part of the Roster as long as their work and commitment to IMAN’s mission and values remains active. The process for expanding, shifting and/or rotating artists on the Roster will be evaluated and further developed throughout this inaugural year. However, our goal is for the overall size of the Roster to be kept small enough to facilitate in-depth conversations, active participation and sustainable relationships to make an impact over time. We expect that as artists cycle through various opportunities in their careers, some may transition away from active Roster membership while remaining engaged as part of IMAN’s overall artist network. This gradual and inevitable process allows the Roster to remain dynamic by periodically inviting applications for new artists to join. Join IMAN’s email list to receive future announcements for the opening of Artist Roster applications.
How are artists selected for the IMAN Artist Roster?
Applications are reviewed by a panel that may include representatives from IMAN’s staff and board of directors, current IMAN-aligned artists, as well as other professionals and leaders in the U.S. arts and cultural field. Successful applicants demonstrate strong alignment with IMAN’s Mission, current initiatives and programs, Arts & Culture Philosophy as well as strong artistic merit and a deep commitment to community, social change and cultural equity.
How are artists selected to be “In Our Network” or “On Our Radar”?
Artists, arts administrators, culture workers and curators listed In Our Network have had long-term, ongoing engagement and relationships with IMAN. On Our Radar lists artists whose applications to the IMAN Artist Roster were met with great enthusiasm and we are looking forward to following their work.
Are events that IMAN promotes for Artist Roster members family friendly?
IMAN has always encouraged creative artistic expression that is safe and welcoming to all individuals and families, while attempting not to censor or stifle artists’ content. While we always aim to take precautions against situations where the integrity of the language or content in any of our spaces is compromised, we recognize that it is sometimes difficult to accomplish both of these goals.
