Dr. Maisha Akbar
Theater, Arts Education, Performance Art

In Preaching the Blues: Black Feminist Performance in Lynching Plays (Routledge, 2020), Dr. Maisha S. Akbar documents and analyzes (anti) lynching plays as an under-examined genre of American drama through which American dramatists contest white supremacist ideology. Furthermore, Dr. Akbar practices on a “playground” of scholarship, performance and activism through her position as an Associate Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at Fort Valley State University (Georgia) where she also directs the Joseph Adkins Players student drama group. She is active in professional organizations including Black Theatre Network, American Society for Theatre Research National Communication Association and Association of Theatre in Higher Education.
